Contemporary music icon Joey Ayala opens Taboan 2016: Literary and Cultural Festival, organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ National Committee on Literary Arts (NCLA), at the Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon. The opening will start at 3:00 p.m. on September 14, 2016, at the CMU Administration grounds.
Other featured artists are the Southern Bukidnon indigenous bands, the Talahari of the Manobo and the Kahika of the Matigsalog, showcasing their indigenous musical instruments.
Members of the NCLA and poets from northern, central, western, eastern and southern Mindanao will read and perform their poems and engage students and teachers in a literary forum defining Mindanawon writing.
Also, the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) interprets in song and dance the works by Southern poets in two performances on September 15 and 16 in “SugaTula (Crossing Poetry).”
Aside from these, there will be literary readings, photo-poetry and poetry writing contests, spoken word poetry, open mike, book exhibits, arts and crafts and agricultural fairs. Taboan 2016 coincides with CMU’s foundation day.
Taboan 2016 is spearheaded by Iligan City-based poet Christine Godinez Ortega. The theme this year is “Pagbinayloay” (exchange), celebrating the country’s literary forms.
The Taboan at the CMU kick-starts a series of satellite events in eight cities all over the country until November this year. Other sites for Taboan 2016 will be at the Mariano M. Marcos State University College Teachers in Laoag City, Ateneo de Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, Anthosia Café in Iriga and Naga cities, University of San Carlos and Robinsons Cebu City, Libro and Robinsons Tacloban City, and at the University of San Agustin and Robinsons in Iloilo City.
