|Outstanding musical achievements of artists, musical piece, journal, cultural worker, or institution, that defined the past decades will be given recognition by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) through the NCCA SUDI Awards.
The NCCA, led by its chairman Arsenio “Nick” Lizaso, executive director Al Ryan S. Alejandre, deputy executive director Marichu G. Tellano, and supervising officer on administration Bernan Joseph R. Corpuz, through its Plan/Policy Formulation and Programming Division (P/PFPD) – Arts Section headed by Ferdinand Isleta, spearheads the SUDI Awards, a National Music award that aims to recognize outstanding contributions of Filipino musical works, creators, institutions, and researchers across genres and modes of productions with the highest standard and artistic excellence.
Winners for the years 2000 to 2009 are Prof. Benicio Sokkong; Prof. Carmencita Guanzon Arambulo; 98.7 DZFE-FM “The Master’s Touch”; Dr. Grace Nono; Mr. José Iñigo Homer Lacambra Ayala; Loboc Children’s Choir; Prof. Josefino Toledo; Dr. Raul Sunico; and UP Singing Ambassadors.
For the years 2010 to 2020, the winners are Acapellago; Ateneo Chamber Singers; Mr. Vincent Ferdinand Dancel a.k.a Ebe Dancel; Mr. Gerard Salonga; Mr. Aristotle Pollisco a.k.a Gloc-9; Mr. Jonathan Manalo; Mr. Noel Cabangon; Rak of Aegis; Philippine Madrigal Singers; and The 70’s Bistro Bar
Meanwhile, eight (8) special citations are given to Akapela Open; Elements Music Camp; Philpop MusicFest Foundation; Pinoy Playlist Music Festival; Bayanihan Musikahan; Mr. Bob Aves; Prof. Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan; and Route 196.
The official award name SUDI is an Ilokano adjective meaning illustrious renowned, celebrated, or famous. SUDI was proposed by Dr. Felipe M. De Leon, Jr., member of the technical working group and incumbent head of the NCCA National Committee on Music.
Awardees were carefully deliberated and selected by the 2020 NCCA SUDI Awards board of jury composed of Bobby Barreiro, Andre Allan Alvarez, Maria Rachelle Gerodias, Francis Reyes, Lutgardo Labad, Christian Bautista, Dr. Felipe De Leon, Jr. Dr. Elena Mirano, Melchor Villena, Dr. Jose Buenconsejo, and was chaired by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab.
The award was initiated by the technical working group, chaired by Mr. Noel Ferrer, under the recommendation of former NCCA chairman and National Artist for Literature Dr. Virgilio Almario. The technical working group consists of National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, NCCA National Committee on Music head Dr. Felipe de Leon, Jr., Organisasyon Ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit and Philpop executive director Dinah Remolacio, Elements Music Camp founder Twinky Lagdameo, Homonym founder and managing director Mike Constantino, and Filipino world music artist Bayang Barrios.
In the succeeding years, excellent and significant musical contributions shall be recognized annually.
SUDI awarding ceremony will happen this 2021 with melodic and symphonic activities to look forward, which can be enjoyed by everyone in this time of new normal, as it will be streamed over NCCA social media accounts. Stay tuned for the final date of the ceremony.
