In partnership with Samsung Electronics (Samsung), the National Book Development Council of Singapore (The Book Council) is thrilled to organise the Samsung KidsTimeTM Authors’ Award (SKTAA) which was recently announced by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and 2nd Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information, Singapore Mr Lawrence Wong at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2014. Supported by Samsung with a generous USD 200,000 endowment, this award will seek to give both published and unpublished authors the chance to see their works turned into mobile apps, as well as a $2,000 cash prize. The SKTAA is open to all authors of ASEAN nationality, and there will be two Grand Prize winners and eight Runners-Up per ASEAN nation, for a total of 100 winners!
The Grand Prize winners will receive a USD 2,000 cash prize, plus their winning work will be turned into a mobile app that will be exclusively available on the Samsung KidsTime mobile platform for a period of 12 months. Runners-Up will also see their work exclusively featured on the Samsung KidsTimeTM mobile platform for 12 months.
Executive Director of the National Book Development Council of Singapore Mr. R Ramachandran says, “This award presents a wonderful opportunity for ASEAN authors of all backgrounds to see their work transcend the printed page. It’s especially wonderful that the original text need not be in English, so Samsung can showcase works that would normally not be seen by an international audience.”
Nicholas Wodtke, Vice President, Media Solution Center, Southeast Asia & Oceania, Samsung Electronics said, “With Samsung KidsTimeTM, we are signalling our intention to provide a targeted channel for authors and publishers to create a safe and engaging ecosystem for children. Working with ASEAN authors and publishers on this Award will help us bridge formats and bring meaningful content to this generation’s children.”
The SKTAA 2015 has extended submissions until 31 December 2014 for published picture books. There will be a second round of submissions from 1 January 2015 to 1 March 2015 for unpublished picture books. The award is open to authors and publishers of picture books for 3-10-year-olds and in all native languages, and requires an English translation only for the purposes of assessment. The winners will be officially announced in May 2015 during the Asian Festival of Children’s Content.
