The R.I.C.E photo exhibit will showcase a variety of rice or rice-based delicacies across Asia.
The UP Asian Center, in cooperation with students of Philippine Studies (PS) 201 class under Dr. Henelito Sevilla, Jr. will be hosting a photo exhibit on rice in Asia, “R.I.C.E: Reaching Interconnectedness through Culture and Exchange” from 24 November to 28 November at the ASEAN Hall, UP Asian Center. The exhibit opens at 2 p.m. and will run until 5 p.m., 28 November. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm (except Sunday). The exhibit is free and open to the public, but participants are encouraged to register online so that the organizers can estimate attendance on opening day.
The photo exhibit will showcase a variety of rice or rice-based delicacies across Asia — such as Laksa, sticky rice with mango, and Kabsa — and chart the rice trail that spans major rice-producing and -consuming regions throughout Asia, including the Philippines. Captions and short essays will accompany the images to highlight the economic, socio-cultural, and political significance of rice.
Rice plays a prominent role in Asian societies; according to the United Nations, more than 90 percent of the world’s rice production is done in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a staple crop, figures in many rituals, and helps determine economic and political policies of states. Foregrounding such importance, the photo exhibit aims to promote a better understanding of rice production and culture throughout Asia.
Free samples of rice or rice-based delicacies will be served during the exhibit opening. Servings will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
The photo exhibit is organized by the students of Philippine Studies (PS) 201 class under Dr. Henelito Sevilla Jr. PS 201 covers the “Philippines in Asia.”
