By virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 439 s. 2003, the month of May is National Heritage Month. The celebration takes a prime in creating among the Filipino people a consciousness, respect, and love for the legacies of the nation’s cultural history.

For 2019, the theme for the National Heritage Month is “Mga Pinuno Para sa Pamana” (Leaders for Heritage) as a challenge to each and every individual to take the lead in preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. The theme emphasizes the need to harvest thriving leaders who will spearhead the upkeep of Philippine cultural heritage and highlights the role of the nation in fostering the youth to become future frontrunners for heritage.

As part of the said celebration, the NCCA enjoins all cultural agencies, national government agencies (NGAs), schools, Philippine embassies and consulates, public libraries, and private institutions to participate in the national event by encouraging them to initiate various heritage-related activities including heritage-related tours, lecture demonstrations, conferences, exhibits, online advocacies, clean up drives in declared cultural and historical sites, and more.

OBJECTIVES

1. To educate the people, especially the youth, and foster their awareness of both tangible and intangible heritage through different trainings, forums, immersions, and other related events;
2. To recognize and support the role of local artists and cultural workers in preserving local tradition and initiate ways to promote preservation and care for our cultural heritage

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR NHM 2019:

1. KICK-OFF CEREMONY

The 2019 NHM Kick-Off Ceremony will be held on May 2, 2019 (Thursday) in Tumauini, Isabela. The venue will be in front of the St. Matthias Parish Church, which is a National Cultural Property as declared by the National Museum; a National Historical Landmark as declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP); and is one of the four Baroque Churches in the Philippines included in the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

4. ONLINE ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN

a. Audio-Video Presentation Contest – The NCCA encourages public participation in the #TanglawNgPamana Audio-Visual Presentation Contest. This contest, initiated by NCCA, is expected to contribute to the awareness of the whole country and increase participation of various sectors in preserving the Filipino culture by giving the participants the chance to promote the vastly rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. b. Infographic Waves – NHM infographics will be published weekly for the whole month of May in the NCCA social media accounts and website. The posts will highlight facts about culture in general including declared cultural heritages, technical definitions, and laws/issuances concerning the preservation and promotion of Philippine heritage.

c. Calendar of Activities – The NCCA shall request different cultural agencies, government offices, schools, and other institutions to submit their proposed activities in line with the said celebration in May. These activities shall then consolidated to form the 2019 NHM Calendar of Activities which was posted in the social media accounts and website of the NCCA for public notice.

The aforementioned agencies have been requested to issue memorandum circulars in line with the celebration of the National Heritage Month this May and encourage the public to participate in the said event.
