Enciclopedia Filipina, Vol. 1 No. 2 Number of pages: 192 pages Amidst the societal transformation of the Philippines brought about by the Americans came the freedom of intellectual exchange which was a marvel at the time. Had Felipe G. Caldeon, a prominent Filipino in his time, lived longer, this promising review journal written in Spanish would have been an eminent venue for intellectual discussion in various facets of the Filipino society at the time, focusing on politics, public administration, comparative legislation, history, economy, financial legislation, and sociology. For this issue, the local setup of obstetrics; last days of the Spanish colonization in the Philippines; the consolidation of the Philippine legal system, and the constitutionality of the American colonial administration of the Philippines were tackled. Mode of acquisition: As seen on the cover of the material, Enciclopedia Filipina was officially acquired by the Main Library on or before July 24, 1968. Apart from this, any record indicating information on the material prior to the acquisition of the Main Library is unavailable. Julio Nakpil and the Philippine Revolution Number of pages: 181 pages As the Philippines commemorates its 125th Anniversary of Independence and Nationhood, it is vital to revisit and take notice of literature that instills nationalism, patriotism, and collective identity as a people. The Good Fight Number of pages: xxiv, 336 pages The true story of the man who started as a young revolutionary to fight against the American People and their flag; who fought bravely, who surrendered and gave his parole in Bataan, who took to his heart the great democratic principles of America, who inculcated them in his own people, and who forty years later threw himself and his brave countrymen back into the hell of Bataan and Corregidor when the American flag was attacked by a treacherous enemy. This story is told in President Quezon’s own words. Mode of acquisition: From The Rafael Salas Collection c/o United Nations Population Fund (Housed Collection) Streets Of Manila Number of pages: 255 pages This is a book for people who want to know who-in-heaven’s name their street was named after. It tells what each Manila street was named during the Spanish time, what it was named during the American period and what it’s called today. Herran, a bustling main street of Paco, Malate, Ermita and Santa Ana was there for generations. Only a few know that Herran was just a li’l ole captain of Montojo’s Spanish fleet in 1898. The street has since been renamed Pedro Gil, for the better, we are told. Most of us wish we knew who Pedro Gil was! The colonial rug has been pulled from under our feet. Manilans felt a bit of sentiment about losing age-old Azcarraga (Manila-born Spaniard who embarked on a meteoric government career in Spain) to Claro M. Recto (even if the latter richly deserve it); of San Luis (Louis IX of France!) to T.M. Kalaw (nationalist and director of the National Library). Not all changes, however, are for the better. Some streets have been renamed after people whose contribution to the country is a puzzle. For instance – but there areso many instances. A historical sense has allowed certain storied street names to remain. Such are those of Spanish-time occupations or trades, like Jaboneros (soap makers), Platerias (silversmiths), Tejerons (makers of tejas or roofing tiles), Arroceros (rice dealers) and Lavanderos (laundrymen). Humor lurks in the name of a narrow Ermita alley, Salsipuedes, which means ‘Get-out-if-you-can’, and in Binondo’s Hormiga, where traffic crawls at ant’s page. No one mourns the loss of such an irrelevant name as Quipuja who was a chieftain of Guam when that country was under the ecclesiastical rule of Spanish Philippines. In this book too are quite a bit of street lore, of neighborhood flavor and facts that belong to the collective memory of Manila folk. Woven in the story of the districts themselves are the people, places, events and circumstances behind those times. In short, it is a book you’ve always thought was needed but were afraid no one have patience to write. [From book cover]

A Century of Being Baguio Number of pages: 252 pages Created to commemorate the centennial celebration of Baguio City in 2009, it narrates the transformations the city has undergone through the span of more than a hundred years from its discovery and development as a mountain resort to becoming the second chartered city of the Philippines in 1909; turning into a highly urbanized city; conquering tragedies; and rising to become a center of education, commerce, tourism; and over time melding into a pot of different people and culture. The magnificent layout of text and images brings all the details of the city’s history to life. Aside from reminiscences of yesteryears, readers are brought to contextualize the future of the city, taking from its past and present turn of events, and cultivate the centennial’s theme which is “A Culture of Sharing.” Mode of acquisition: Purchased from Baguio Centennial Commission, Inc. Issued to the library on February 11, 2010. Igorot by Heart: Keynotes and Selections of a Generation Number of pages: xviii, 332 pages Within this anthology are curated selection of keynote addresses and presentations delivered at the Igorot International Consultations (IIC) held in different countries between 1995 and 2010, meticulously organized by the Igorot Global Organization (IGO). Its primary objective is to empower contemporary Igorots with a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage and roots. This compilation was also born out of the pressing need to educate Filipinos about the Igorots who have long been, and continue to be, the subjects of widespread misconceptions, frequently derogatory in nature. These largely stem from a lack of awareness and profound understanding regarding their physical attributes, achievements, culture, traditions, values, and history. This collection seeks to rectify these misunderstandings and offer an enlightening and more comprehensive perspective from the standpoint of the Igorot people themselves. Short biographical sketches of the presenters, who have established themselves in different continents around the world in various professional fields and callings, are included to provide further depth to their speeches. The entries point to other valuable literature authored by the speakers in their graduate and doctoral studies abroad, in addition to other sources they have consulted and referenced. Mode of acquisition: Donated by Sonny Touche Sawad on April 11, 2012. History on the Cordillera: Collected Writings on Mountain Province History Number of pages: viii, 213 pages An important material that delves into the history of the Philippine Cordilleras during the Spanish colonial rule. It sheds light on this subject wherein very little is written about. Through the author’s patient search in Spanish annals, mainly in religious diaries, several articles are produced that account for events recounting Spanish encounters with the Igorots. Entries date back to narratives as early as the mid-1500s. A whole chapter is dedicated to Cordillera Chronology starting from 1572, during which attraction to the mountain gold mines started, up to 1898 when the Spanish occupation of the Cordillera ended. Another entry of immense value contained herein is “A Correction to Cordillera History–The So-Called Igorot Revolt of 1601” which offers a historical account as told by Augustinian historian Gaspar de San Agustin in his 1698 Conquistas. Mode of acquisition: Donated in 2022 by a participant in the BCPL Reading Club Forum who wishes to be anonymous.

Keywords: Baguio City — History; Philippines — History. The Gold Ore was a weekly newspaper in Baguio City with the first issue dated December 15, 1975. It was published by Benjamin Romero Salvosa, founder of the Baguio Colleges Foundation (BCF), the forerunner of today’s University of the Cordilleras (UC). Gold Ore was a student paper staffed by youth who campaigns to bring about political or social change during the administration of the former President Ferdinand Marcos. To protect the youth writing for their student paper from the military, Salvosa turned The Gold Ore into a regular general newspaper that reached more people. Even though they faced financial struggles, Salvosa was determined to keep the newspaper running. He set up a printing press to produce 5,000 copies every week, even though it cost more to print each copy than what they sold it for. The Gold Ore went on to become one of the pioneers of the “alternative press” movement, providing an independent and critical voice against the Marcos regime. They fearlessly reported on issues that other media outlets avoided, like human rights abuses and government corruption.Despite constant threats, The Gold Ore continued its mission to defend press freedom. Its courage inspired other journalists and publications to join the fight. In 2001, The Gold Ore stopped publishing after fulfilling its mission as a champion of press freedom during the Martial Law. Its legacy lives on, reminding us of the importance of independent media in upholding democracy and free speech. It also honors the bravery of journalists and activists who risked everything to fight against oppression. (Source: Dizon, J.R. (2023). The Young Marcos Number of pages: ix, 107 pages This book by Victor Nituda provides a glimpse of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.’s ancestry. It chronicles the president’s childhood years through the gathered recollections of Ferdinand Marcos’ mother, Josefa Edralin Marcos, and his brother, Pacifico as well as the reminiscences of other people who had close encounters with him. Such reminiscences include Marcos’ boyhood in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, elementary education in Laoag and Manila and summertime in Batac, Ilocos Norte, among others, which reflect the social and intellectual traits of Marcos. The book also contains portraits of Marcos’ ancestors, immediate family members, and other people that once rubbed elbows with him, as well as photographs of Marcos’ hometowns, Batac and Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, and other local places, such as churches and schools, that were significant to the life of the young Marcos. Reading the ‘Young Marcos’ would help a reader of today, especially the youth, know the unique characteristics and values of native Ilocanos. It also gives a picture of the harsh Ilocos landscapes and how the Ilocanos back then prosper in such an environment. Understanding these things and the other factors that helped President Marcos Sr., succeed in life or political career on the basis of first-hand accounts can help a reader connect with important pieces of local and national history. Moreover, this book can provide credible biographical information for future research on past Philippine presidents and invaluable insights into discussions on Ilocano identity and national history and heritage. The Philippine Islands and Their people Number of pages: 529 pages Islands Professor Worcester’s book is as meritorious as it is opportune. The author’s preparation was derived from extensive travels and explorations in nearly all parts of the Philippines. In 1887- 88 , he was one of a party which, prompted by “an interest in the study of birds, as well as a desire to aid in the explorations of a little-known country, ‘’ spent eleven months in the Archipelago and visited fifteen of the islands. In 1890 Professor Worcester and one of his former fellow-explorers returned to the Philippines and continued their explorations for a further period of two years and eight months. Being naturalists as well as explorers, the author and his associates did not follow the usual lines of travel, but spent much of their time in the interior of the islands and among the primitive and of times barbarous tribes which constitute a large portion of the population. The reader of Professor Worcester’s book finds it hard to decide which passion is stronger in the author, the love for science or the fondness for adventure; he needed both to accomplish his work, and he possesses both in a high degree. Mode of acquisition: Mrs. Melou Quiming-Quines, teacher from San Isidro Elementary School, Delfin Albano, Isabela donated their rarest 1890s – 1950s collection of books (total of 35 vols.) about the history of the Philippines. Each regularly organized province was provided a Provincial Board composed of three provincial officials: the governor, the treasurer and a “third member” who in most cases was known as the supervisors. Early board resolutionswere written in Spanish until the late 1920’s when the board used English language in writing their resolutions. Nowadays, the Vice Governor , Faustino G. His birth anniversary is declared holiday in the province of Albay and the provincial police headquarters is named after him. Mode of acquisition: Complimentary copy, donated by Guinobatan Tourism Office An Orosipon kan Bikolnon: Interrupting the Philippine Nation Number of pages: 365 pages “Orosipon”, a Bikolano word for “story,” suggests that the story never stops being formed as it passes through multiple speakers. Orosipon, coming from the root word osip which approximates the verb “tell,” points to more than one person involved in an act of telling, which makes the act of telling proper to no one in particular. Indeed, it is improper for any one to act as the sole teller. An Orosipon kan Bikolnon reads selected fiction and nonfiction from the periodicals Sanghiran nin Bikol, An Parabareta, Bikolnon, and Bikolana published in the first half of the twentieth century in the Bicol region. The texts reveal the orosiponic pulse against the narration of the Philippine nation-state during the period. Aedificat Dominus Number of pages: 162 pages On the sixth of December 2014, Bishop Wilfredo D. Manlapaz turns 50 as a priest. If there is one institution that has every reason to celebrate this occasion, it is the Diocese of Tagum. Not only is the said Diocese the local church in which most of his 50 years has been spent, it is also the institution that has benefited most from his priesthood. This confident claim is grounded on the fact that this Bicolano cleric has for 28 glorious years doubly serve the Diocese of Tagum: as a priest and, most especially, as a bishop. Hopefully, it is not preposterous and presumptuous to assert that the golden jubilarian’s best priestly years are spent in Tagum! We, the clergy, religious and the lay faithful, are therefore grateful to our bishop for his dedicated service to the local church. We want to reminisce and perpetuate his priestly accomplishments; hence, we come up with this Coffee Table Book. This Coffee Table Book records the milestones of Bishop Willy’s life and ministry, mostly in pictorials and serves as our collective gratitude to the Almighty God for having given us a faithful shepherd and humble servant who is only His instrument in the building up of His Kingdom here on earth. For, truly, it is the Lord who builds: Aedificat Dominus (Bishop Willy’s episcopal motto). “Unless the Lord builds the house, in vain do it builders labor; unless the Lord watches over the city, in vain do the watchmen keep vigil” (Psalms 127:1) Glimpses of Davao Province Number of pages: 210 pages Pride in the great progressive strides of Davao Province and love for its natural beauty and treasures have stimulated the Municipal Secretaries’ League of Davao to publish this little book on the socio-economic facts of Davao. From a mere part of Great Davao in the 60’s, Davao Province has become today a social, cultural, and business giant in Southern Mindanao. The twenty-one municipalities comprising the province have contributed their own share of unique beauty, excellent people, and vast natural resources that transformed Davao to what it is now. Today, Davao Province is known by other names; “Gold Country of the South” and “ Cooperative Country”. Through the following pages, we invite you to take a glimpse of our beautiful Davao, learn of its colorful history and profile and to share in our pride and love for Davao. Kagikan: Tracing the Flow of Tagum’s Rich History Number of pages: 161 pages KAGIKAN, as the name suggests, is an in-depth investigation of the colorful history of Tagum City. Replete with historical facts mined from over a century ago, this book is the first comprehensive document that substantially narrates the humble beginnings of this community by the river, and how it grows over the course of time. It also highlights the gallantry of the Moro heroes of Tagum who assassinated Spanish Governor Jose Pinzon y Purga in 1861 – a pivotal event that enjoins the Tagumenyos in the nationwide resistance against foreign oppression. Comprehensive accounts in this book include the original settlers of Tagum; the perseverance the migrants from Luzon and Visayas; the origin of the name Tagum and by extension, the debunking of the myth of Magugpo as the original name of the city; and the profiles of Post – War Mayors who helped shaped the destiny of Tagum. A product of years of rigorous research, KAGIKAN is truly a gem for all its worth – a love letter to Tagumenyos and the generations to come.
