The NCCA National Dance Competition

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), through the National Committee on Dance (NCD), will be spearheading the Sayaw Pinoy 2024: The NCCA National Dance Competition as part of its objective to promote dance in its various forms. Furthermore, the program aims to stress the importance of the competition as it raises the artists’ consciousness on the value of artistic excellence. It provides opportunities for artists to maximize and showcase their true potential. It also hopes to develop emotional fitness through teamwork as the group experience will bring about dependability, responsibility, commitment, sportsmanship, discipline, creativity, and awareness of the value of the art of dance, consequently, acquiring the value of working together as a team towards common goals which will extend to daily undertakings beyond the competition.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

    1. The Competition is open to all Filipino citizens residing in the Philippines.
    2. Dance categories for the competition are the following:  Folk Dance, Contemporary Dance, Ballroom, and Hip Hop
    3. The Official Entry Form could be submitted via email at sayawpinoy2024@gmail.com or in person at the NCCA Arts Section, 5th Floor, NCCA Building, 633 Gen. Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila.
    4. Deadline for the submission of entries is on SEPTEMBER 5, 2024, THURSDAY at 11:59PM.
    5. Once the entry form is submitted, an official Notice of Acceptance or Non-Acceptance will be sent to the applicants.
    6. All participants must be at least 13 years old by September 26, 2024.
    7. All participating group should secure their own waiver and permit to travel.
    8. Each group shall be composed of a minimum of 6 dancers and a maximum of 20 dancers. 
    9. Dance groups or dancers directly associated with the NCCA, National Committee on Dance, organizing committee, and judges will not be allowed to participate in the competition.
    10. All expenses in joining the competition shall be shouldered by the participating groups.
    11. No registration fees will be charged to participants in the competition.
    12. No group/dancer may take part in more than one performance in the same dance category. (e.g. A folk dance group or a folk dancer cannot appear twice in the folk dance category).
    13. A group/dancer may participate in more than one dance category. (e.g. a folk dance group or a folk dancer may have entries in the other dance categories: Contemporary, Ballroom or Hip hop).
    14. A time limit of 5 minutes will be enforced and corresponding one point from each judge’s total score shall be deducted in the event the time limit is exceeded. The time of the performance starts with the first note of the music or the first movement, whichever comes first.
    15. The committee reserves the right to amend these guidelines and to refuse any entry on any grounds with proper advice to the parties concerned.
    16. All music must be recorded in MP3 FORMAT ONLY and must be uploaded to a designated Google Drive. Label the audio file as [NAME OF THE GROUP]_[TITLE OF THE DANCE]. The link to the audio file should be submitted to the organizer along with the entry form by the set deadline. If the music is not yet finished and there are still changes, the final file must be submitted two weeks prior to the competition (September 12, 2024).
    17. Special lighting or lighting design will not be allowed.
    18. All competitors will be assigned numbers for the competition through a drawing of lots during registration.
    19. Prompting of competitors from the backstage or from the audience is not allowed.
    20. The following are strictly prohibited in the performance:
      • Sets (e.g. risers, backdrop, tables, etc.).
      • Performance of dangerous choreography/routine
      • Use of live animals
      • Use of real fighting armor (e.g. sword, knife, guns, arrow, spears, etc.
      • Use of any form of liquid (e.g. blood, oil, water, etc.)
      • Use of fire, candles, and any pyrotechnic materials.
      • Use of confetti 
      • Breaking of glass, pots, etc.
      • Audio visual presentation or screen projection.
    21. Hand props may be used (e.g. stick, fan, ring, umbrella, etc.). Bamboo, wood, steel, or plastic pole may be used but must not be more than 3 meters long.
    22. Failure to comply with any of the foregoing guidelines will result to disqualification.
    23. Complaints and protests regarding violation of competition rules and guidelines should be addressed before the announcement of winners. 
    24. The judges’ decision is final and unappealable.

SPECIFIC GUIDELINES FOR EACH CATEGORY

I. FOLK DANCE CATEGORY
      1. The contest piece is focused on ‘FAITH’ OR RELIGIOUS FOLK DANCES, whether in Spanish influences or rural dances, as long as the dance is incorporating ‘Faith.’
      2. The dance must be from any of the following published Philippine Folk Dance books:
        • Philippine Folk Dances, Volumes 1-6 by Francisca Reyes Tolentino
        • Philippine National Dances by Francisca Reyes Aquino
        • Visayan Folk Dances, Volumes 1-3 by Libertad Fajardo
        • Pangasinan Folk Dances by Jovita Sison Friese
        • Samar Folk Dances by Juan C. Miel
        • Handumanan by Jose Balcena
        • Philippine Folk Dances and Songs by the Bureau of Public Schools 1965
        • Sayaw: Dances of the Philippine Islands Volume 1-9 by the Philippine Folk Dance Society
        • Classic Collection of Philippine Folk Dances by the Philippine Folk Dance Society volume 1-11
      3. Medley (combination) of different dances is not allowed.
      4. In dances where the literature does not specify or describe the entrance/exit, the trainer may arrange one, however, both must not exceed sixteen (16) measures.
      5. Copy of literature of the dance shall be submitted to the Organizer together with the application form on the set deadline.

Criteria for Judging: Performance 30%, Interpretation of Written Instruction (20%), Staging (20%), Appropriate Costume (15%), and Overall Impact (15%)

II. CONTEMPORARY DANCE CATEGORY
      1. The competition piece should depict the NCCA Core Values of Marangal, Malikhain, Mapagbago, Filipino
      2. The contest piece must be at least three (3) minutes but not more than five (5) minutes.
      3. The dance piece should be an original choreography in contemporary form.
      4. Soft ballet shoes or pointe shoes may be worn (optional).
      5. Costume must be appropriate to the concept of the dance. Nudity is strictly prohibited.
      6. Obscene choreography, indecent movements, and killing of animals are strictly prohibited.

Criteria for Judging: Choreography/Composition (30%), Performance (30%), Technique (20%), and Overall Impact (20%)

III. BALLROOM FORMATION COMPETITION
  1. Number of Couples.
    • The group shall consist of six, seven or eight couples. No person may dance in more than one team in the same event.
  2. Formation Competitions
    • There will be only one category: Latin American dance
  3. Music and Dances
    • Teams must base their routines on the Samba, Cha- Cha- Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive, and any other Latin American rhythm with an optional maximum of 16 bars of music in any dance.
    • No formation team shall dance a routine exceeding 6 minutes including entry and exit.
    • Teams not complying with these requirements may be disqualified
  4. Lifts
    • Lifts are not permitted. A lift is any movement during which one member of a couple has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of the other partner.
    • The Chairperson may disqualify teams any members of which perform lifts during their judged dance performance.
  5. Competition Dress
    • Competitors shall dress or costume according to the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) Dress Regulations.
    • All men in a team must wear the same dress (color and style) and all women  in a team must wear the same dress (color and style).
      • Men’s dress in colors is permitted. No properties are allowed.
    • No change of dress, or use of accessories or colors, is permitted during the Competition.
    • The Chairperson may disqualify any formation team at the competition which is not dressed or costumed according to this Rule.

Criteria for Judging: Technical Merit (30%), Artistic Impression (50%), Entertainment Value (20%)

IV . HIP HOP PINOY CATEGORY (The Best Pinoy Dance Crew)
  1. The competition piece should depict the NCCA Core Values of Marangal, Malikhain, Mapagbago, Filipino. 
  2. The use of music should be limited to Original Pilipino Music (OPM) only, and may incorporate digital mixing.
  3. The contest piece must be at least three (3) minutes but not more than five (5) minutes.
  4. Groups should include in their performance a broad selection of street dance styles such as locking, popping, krumping, vogueing, b-boying, hip-hop house, new school, urban without excessive use of the same move or pattern. NO ACROBATIC TRICKS ALLOWED.
  5. Appropriate attire should be observed in the competition. It may include accessories such as hats, caps, gloves, scarves, jewelries, etc.
  6. Removing pieces of clothing during the performance is allowed provided it is not offensive or out of character.
  7. Movements that are categorized under Break Dance are permitted, but should not control/ dominate the performance/ no toss in stunts.
  8. Any move where the competitors’ weight is solely on the neck/ head i.e. head spins, head stands, etc. is not allowed.

Criteria for Judging: Choreography and Style (35%), Performance (35%), Costume (15%) and Overall Impact (15%).
