The National Commission on Culture and the Arts’ (NCCA) leads the celebration of Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) this October, in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 798, signed in 1991 with an aim to highlight the significance of national awareness and pride in the Filipino culture and heritage expressing hope of the nation.
This year’s theme, “Honoring Traditions, Fostering Innovation” captures the balance between preserving the past and shaping the future. The celebration aims to connect the past, present and future by incorporating the country’s local traditions while inspiring evolution to society. MGM is set to kick-off the celebration on October 1 at SM Lanang, Davao City, alongside the Mindanao Art Fair event. The opening celebration is then followed by various activities across the country. These include the including the Luzon Art Fair happening at the Bulwagang Kanlahi in Tarlac City on October 3-6, and ManilArt at the SM Aura, Bonifacio Global City from October 9 to 13. After a month-long series of events and celebration, MGM’s closing ceremony is scheduled on October 29 at the Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit Cavite. While MGM is celebrated in October, spill-over events continue until November with the Visayas Art Fair happening at the Oakridge Business Park in Cebu from November 22 to 24, 2024. Museums and galleries continue to play a significant role in the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage of the Philippines, especially in today’s era of technological innovation and globalization.
