The flagship program of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts – National Committee on Dramatic Arts, Tanghalang Bayan, commenced at the historic Metropolitan Theater on February 26, 2025.

True to its name, Tanghalang Bayan brought the Metropolitan Theater to life, transforming its every space into a vibrant hub for performers, instructors, and participants. From its hallways and courtyards to various function rooms and the famed main theater, the event maximized every corner of the venue with a multitude of activities.

Divided into three segments, Tanghalang Bayan spread its programs across the courtyard, main theater, ballroom, music room, and audio-visual room. Activities took place throughout the morning, culminating in Pinid: Ang Pagsasara sa Pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng mga Sining.

At the main theater, audiences were treated to performances by theater companies from across the country. With a diverse lineup mirroring the event’s participants, the showcase spanned various genres, evoking a broad spectrum of emotions. From Gat Andres Bonifacio by the Tag-Ani Performing Arts Society, which delved into the life of the Philippines’ original “loverboy,” to a moving self-help piece on mental health by the USA Little Theater Iloilo x 033 Playhouse, each performance highlighted the versatility of acting, singing, and dancing.

Simultaneously, workshops took place at the ballroom, catering to actors and theater enthusiasts. Offerings ranged from impromptu one-act plays to coaching sessions led by seasoned theater directors, ensuring that every participant had an opportunity to hone their craft.

Meanwhile, the AVR room provided a more intimate setting for select performances, allowing audiences to experience raw, powerful storytelling up close. Some theater companies delivered striking pieces on social injustices, while others performed poignant monologues, such as one about the loss of a father—each a testament to the depth and vulnerability of the actors.

For musically inclined participants, the courtyards of the Metropolitan Theater hosted vocal and instrumental workshops. Attendees gathered to engage in vocal exercises and ensemble performances, guided by their instructors in mastering their chosen instruments.

Following Tanghalang Bayan, the National Arts Month Closing Ceremony took place. As the performances, workshops, and festivities wrapped up, participants had time to prepare for the final activities curated by the NCCA-NCDA for the grand culmination of the celebration.

With its dynamic fusion of performances, interactive workshops, and insightful discourse, Tanghalang Bayan reaffirmed its role as a cornerstone of Philippine theater, celebrating the richness and diversity of the nation’s dramatic arts.
