The Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference (VIVA ExCon) returns to Negros for its 13th biennale on November 13-16 2014.
Following the 12th VIVA ExCon held in Dumaguete City Negros Oriental in 2012, this year’s four-day exhibit-cum-conference will be held in different areas in Negros Occidental. The conference component of the VIVA ExCon 2014 will be conducted at the Nature’s Village in Talisay City. The topics to be discussed will be drawn into a series of forums dedicated to discussing issues and topics concerning artists, curators, galleries, museums, and collectors; with several resource speakers assigned for each field.
Alongside the conference, exhibits will be situated in three different locations. VIVA Inspire Lifeforce Exhibition will be housed at the new Gallery Orange in Bacolod, the Jess Ayco Modern Art Exhibition at Balay ni Tana Dicang in Talisay City and the GarboHonoring and Exhibition will be at the Negros Museum, Bacolod.
A final plenary will be of a dialogue with the Garbo Awardees to be followed by GarbosaBisaya Exhibition and Awarding at the Negros Museum. A fellowship night with an “Inspire Costume Party” Theme will cap the four-day event.
Since 1996, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the prime government agency that promotes the country’s culture and the arts, has adapted and, ever since sponsored, the VIVA ExCon. NCCA saw VIVA ExCon as a blueprint for local initiatives in the formation of regional arts festivals in Luzon and Mindanao. The NCCA, with its vision of a Filipino culture that is the wellspring of global and national well-being, continues to support VIVA ExCon’s drive toward the consolidation of the region’s arts.
VIVA ExCon aspires to bridge the Visayan Islands in the field of visual art. The challenge in the unification of the region’s arts lies behind the geographical fragmentation of the island cluster. Through dialogues, interactions, networking and cultural exchanges, VIVA ExCon rises up to this and intends to facilitate development in the local visual art scene, provide venue for collaboration among the region’s artists and be able to answer to the constant call of change in the field of art.
