Threads That Bind, ASEAN Textiles in Contemporary Times opens on 5 August and runs until 21 August 2019 at the NCCA Gallery in Intramuros, Manila.

The Philippines recognizes the need to further promote and heighten awareness of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and instill in the minds of the Filipino people the importance, value, and meaning of ASEAN in achieving and maintaining regional peace and development.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 282 dated 31 July 2017 declaring the month of August as ASEAN Month, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs, organizes a cultural exhibition featuring the fashion collection entitled, THREADS THAT BIND, ASEAN Textiles in Contemporary Times.

The items to be exhibited at the NCCA shall feature a collection inspired by ASEAN countries and its Dialogue Partners in the Asia-Pacific. The exhibit pieces, which graced the first anniversary of the ASEAN Culture House in Busan, South Korea were designed by prominent Filipino designer Renee Salud, best known for his contemporary approach to traditional Filipino clothing and creative use of fabrics from different parts of the world. His choice of textiles portray traditional weaving techniques that have been reinterpreted and reinvented to more stylish designs, while retaining their recognizable traditional features and aesthetics.

With the pieces displayed in this exhibition, one can observe and appreciate the centuries-old tradition of weaving and textiles in the ASEAN and its neighbors in the Asia-Pacific region. Through the skillful hands of artisans from the participating countries and the talented designer, one realizes that textiles can be modern without losing their identity and distinct features. Apart from the textiles, similarities in material (silk), patterns (geometric) and surface embellishments (beadwork and embroidery) are also evident in the designed pieces.

By using clothes as a means of highlighting ASEAN textiles, its colors and craftsmanship, the exhibit draws attention to the rich culture and traditions that bind the ASEAN community.  The exhibit is likewise a fitting tribute to the 52nd founding anniversary of ASEAN on 8 August 2019.

The exhibit aims to raise ASEAN awareness and promote the ASEAN identity to the general public and opens on 5 August and runs until 21 August 2019 at the NCCA Gallery in Intramuros, Manila.
