The National Committee for Literary Arts (NCLA), one of the 19 national sub-committees of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), will be celebrating the National Arts Month, traditionally known as “Ani ng Sining,” on February 28 to 29 at the Pinnacle Hotel and Suites in Davao City.

Reading the Regions: A National Arts Month 2020 Celebration will bring together artists and writer-educators who will share various approaches to teaching local art and literature, highlighting distinct traditions and emerging themes from different regions and across the languages of the country.

The celebration is open to teachers, students, and anyone interested in exchanging views about local writing and the arts.

National Artist Resil B. Mojares will deliver the keynote address on writing from the regions. Plenary lectures will be given by acclaimed poet Merlie M. Alunan and novelist and anthropologist Bro. Karl Gaspar, CSsR.

Panels during Reading the Regions include “Reading Folk Poetry and Songs”; “Reading Oral Narratives”; and “Issues and Perspectives on Literature from the Regions” among others.

Apart from the plenary lectures and panel discussions, there will be short film viewings and discussion on local cinema, performances, and teaching demonstrations.

The theme “literature from the regions” was in part inspired by the NCLA-produced anthology of essays on teaching titled Reading the Regions which will be launched afternoon of February 28.
