With this year’s theme SINING NG PAG-ASA, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), headed by its chairman, Arsenio “Nick” Lizaso, executive director Oscar Casaysay, and deputy executive directors Marichu Tellano and Bernan Joseph Corpuz, through its Subcommission on the Arts (SCA) led by its commissioner Dr. Rolando Tolentino, leads the celebration of National Arts Month (NAM) this February. Promulgated by then President Corazon Aquino in 1991, Presidential Proclamation No. 683 declares February of every year as National Arts Month to celebrate artistic excellence and pay tribute to the uniqueness and diversity of the Filipino heritage and culture. This year’s theme SINING NG PAG-ASA aims to recognize arts as a source and expression of hope as shown in the creative ways we respond to the effects of the pandemic, natural calamities, and other social realities, as well as the arts’ role in improving our community life as Filipinos. The celebration is mainly composed of the flagship projects of SCA’s seven national committees—Architecture and Allied Arts (head: LAr. Zenaida DC. Galingan), Cinema (head: Dr. Rolando B. Tolentino), Dance (head: Dr. Shirley Halili-Cruz), Literary Arts (head: Dr. Julieta C. Mallari), Music (head: Dr. Felipe M. De Leon Jr.), Dramatic Arts (head: Dr. Felimon B. Blanco), and Visual Arts (head: Ms. Geraldine B. Araneta). |
FLAGSHIP PROGRAMS PER NATIONAL COMMITTEE

Saan Ka Lulugar: Creativity as the Catalyst for Recovery is the flagship project of the National Committee on Architecture and Allied Arts for the celebration of the National Arts Month 2022. The project is composed of four webinar sessions that highlight conversations on the dynamic transformation of public and private spaces in the new normal. The webinar series will be hosted via zoom and livestreamed via Facebook from February 11 to March 4, 2022. The project aims to promote and popularize the outstanding creations of Filipino artists in the time of pandemic; and increase awareness and knowledge of innovations in planning and design as a response to the pandemic, other natural hazards, and the new normal. |

Cinema Rehiyon: Cinema Society in World Change is the flagship project of the National Committee on Cinema, which will be composed of webinars and round-table discussions among regional filmmakers and talk-back, showing of best regional films produced in 2021 such as Mindanao short films as the opening film. Cinema Rehiyon will be conducted from February 16 to 28, 2022. |

Dance Sayaw Pinoy Goes Virtual: Dance of Hope, the longest-running flagship project for NAM of the National Committee on Dance, aims to provide venue for established and upcoming dance groups from all over the country to interact, exchange choreographic ideas, discover more groups from the regions and provide them opportunities to showcase their works. At this time of the pandemic, Sayaw Pinoy hopes to provide continuity for dance creation while providing some kind of assistance to the different dance groups, encouraging hope. Sayaw Pinoy will target to engage about 80 groups and 8 shows on the following dates.

The 16th Tanghal National University & Community Based Theater Festival, National Committee on Dramatic Arts’ project for this year’s celebration of NAM will run from February 14 to 26, 2022 featuring 30-minute school/university-based and collaborative performances from all over the country. |

The National Committee on Literary Arts will conduct Himaya: Panitikan ng Pagbabanyuhay for this year’s NAM celebration which is mainly composed of publication of learning material and a two-day conference on March 25 and 26, 2022. There’s also a call for papers along with a tribute to National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera as well as Gawad Lumbera.

Music Musikapuluan: Gems of Contemporary Music in the Different Genres is the project of the National Committee on Music featuring various types of music written in the last five or ten years namely choral works/ a cappella groups, pop-ethnic/protest songs, classical music (sonata, chamber music, piano music, et. al), traditional ensemble (rondalla, kulintang ensemble), vocal classical music (kundiman, art songs), Philippine music theater, large instrumental ensemble (orchestra, pop orchestra, symphonic band, and pop music.

This year’s NAM, National Committee on Visual Arts is set to conduct Bagong Biswal 2022, composed of 5 installments of 30-40 artists and artist groups to be given P22,000.00 each, exhibition walkthrough, pop outdoor exhibition, community project, murals, or workshop, and webinar series. |
The opening ceremony was held on February 4, 2022, streamed via the NCCA Facebook page, showcasing various performances, virtual exhibits, poem and story reading, film excerpts, among others from the seven art forms.

The Ani ng Dangal recognizes artists, cultural workers and works that have earned international awards and accolades during the past year. Details for this year’s Ani ng Dangal will be posted soon. |
