The 21st Century Philippine Literature Reader: Prose Narratives (Volume 1) is an anthology of prose literature that deals with themes and issues on the environment, changing social norms, economic struggles, civil wars, shifting political powers, and technological revolution. It features the works of Jenny Ortuoste, Anna Margarita V. Camua, Chuckberry J. Pascual, Jolly M. Lugod, Edgar Samar, Charlson Ong, Rogelio L. Ordonez, Bebang Siy, and Tilde Acuña from the National Capital Region; Rosalina A. Mendigo, Clarito Garcia de Francia, and Richard H. Kinnud from the Cordillera Administrative Region; Joel B. Manuel, Aileen R. Rambaud, and Ariel Sotelo Tabág from Northern Luzon; Rowena P. Festin, Joey Alcones Tabula, and Julieta C. Mallari from Central Luzon; Jay Salvador P. Salvosa III, Ma. Cienna Jaucian (translator), and Emmanuel T. The 21st Century Philippine Literature Reader: Stories for Children (Volume 1) is an anthology that introduces readers to the themes and issues that could have an impact on children’s development. It features works by Felicidad P. Galang-Pereña, Cheeno Marlo M. Sayuno, Will P. Ortiz, and Eugene Y. Evasco of the National Capital Region; Francis C. Macansantos, Bernadette Villanueva Neri, and Conviron Altatis of the Cordillera Administrative Region; Lea Dominno Manzano, Julieta C. Mallari, Cheeno Marlo M. Sayuno, Liwliwa Malabed, and Pejay A. Padrigon of Luzon; Alice Tan Gonzales, Eliodora L. Dimzon, May Anne T. Jaro, Allen Mae Montablan, Janis Claire B. Salvacion, Michael Carlo C. Villas, and Firie Jill T. Ramos of Visayas; and German Villanueva Gervacio of Mindanao.

NCLA Executive Council member (2020-2022), May Anne T. Jaro served as Editor and Project Director while NCLA Head (2020-2022) Julieta C. Mallari was the Managing Editor.

As the Department of Education aims “to provide the Filipino learners with the necessary skills and competencies to prepare them to take on the challenges of the 21st Century,” through its publications, the National Committee on Literary Arts also tries to answer the need for authentic 21st Century Philippine literature that contributes to the promotion of quality education as it strives to enrich and preserve the country’s literary tradition.
