Objectives

promote archives administration through education, research and study

disseminate knowledge and techniques through national/ international sharing of experience/knowledge related to archives administration

develop, improve and advance standards appropriate for archives administration

establish/ maintain communication and cooperation among archivists including the institutions they represent, and archives-users

promote the adoption of sound archives principles and standards by all public and private agencies that have responsibility for the preservation and administration of archival materials

maintain/ strengthen relations with record managers, historians, librarians, educators and allied disciplines

cooperate with other professional organizations, cultural, education and religious institutions having mutual interests in the preservation and the use of cultural treasures/heritage

purchase, lease, own, hold acquire or otherwise accept such property, real or personal, as may be necessary, convenient or approximate to serve its purposes

Membership

archivists, records officers/personnel, librarians and other personnel working in various archives, namely: academic, business/corporate, hospitals /medical, government, ecclesiastical/religious/church, personal/private, audiovisual and film archives.

membership may either be individual, institutional and fellows of the Society

Society of Film Archivists, Inc.  (SOFIA)

Brief History

SOFIA is a non-stock corporation duly registered on July 28, 1993 with the Securities and Exchange Commission

Objectives

promote and advance film/video archive administration through education, research and study

disseminate professional knowledge and techniques through national and international sharing of experience/knowledge related to film/video archive administration

develop, improve and advance standards appropriate to film/video archive administration

establish and maintain communication and cooperation among film/video archivists, the institutions in which they work and film/video users

promote the adoption of sound principles and standards by all agencies, public and private, that have responsibility for the preservation and administration of film/video archival materials

maintain and strengthen relations with the film industry/media practitioners, film historians, librarians, educators and others in allied disciplines

cooperate with other professional organizations, cultural and educational institutions having mutual interests in the preservation and use of film as part of the cultural heritage and national treasures

purchase, lease, own, hold, acquire or otherwise accept such property, real or personal , as may be necessary, convenient or appropriate to serve the purposes herein expressed

do all such other acts as are necessary or conducive to the attainment of the above objectives or any of them, provided that nothing shall be done contrary to existing laws of the Philippines

Membership/Rights and Responsiblilities

Board determines the qualifications for membership

exercise the right to vote on all maters relating to the affairs of the association

eligible to any elective or appointive office

participate in all deliberations/meetings

avail of all its facilities

examine all its records or books during business hours

obey and comply with its by-laws and regulations that may be promulgated

attend all meetings that may be called by the Board of Trustees; and

pay membership dues and other assessments

Philippine Records Management Association, Inc. (PRMA)

Brief History

non-profit organization duly registered on April 17, 1974 with the Securities and Exchange Commission

Objectives

develop and advance standards of professional competence in the field of records and information management

promote the welfare of government and business records management personnel through study, education and research

promote scientific interest in records and information management and broaden the views and scope of service of those involved in records keeping

provide a source of information by sharing experiences and expertise related to the field of records and information management

help establish and maintain cordial and mutually beneficial relationship between associations ands similar groups, here and abroad

Membership

any person whose professional interests and/or responsibilities lie within the scope of the purposes set forth in the PRMA constitution and by-law are eligible for membership

membership may either be as regular, life-time, honorary and chapter member.

PRMA is an affiliate member of the Philippine Council on Management (PHILCOMAN) as well as international bodies like International Records Management Council (IRMC) and International Council of Archives (ICA)

Philippine Association for Scientific Conservation of Cultural Properties (PASCON)

Brief History

established in May 1986 as a non-stock and non-profit organization duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission

Objectives/Activities

promote unity among individuals involved in the conservation of cultural properties, such as art works, ethnographic collections, archaeological artifacts and other materials of historical significance as well as the upgrading of ones knowledge to a scientific level

conduct training courses, seminars and workshops regarding conservation to members and non-members

conduct researches on possible use of local materials

disseminate local conservation techniques in order to gain due credit and recognition in international scene

Membership

conservators employed in the different conservation laboratories of the country

students, museum personnel and other private individuals with interest in material conservation/restoration can join PASCON

About the Author:
Melquiades T. dela Cruz worked for the recognition of Records Management as a profession, and in 1986, received a Merit Award for “outstanding contribution to the advancement of Records Management throughout the world” among other awards. He served as Presidential Staff Director for the Office of the President, and now extends Records Management Consultancy to various companies like World Bank in the Systems Improvement Program of the Philippine Coconut Authority and the Jacinto Group of Companies, etc.
