The University of the Philippines Department of History with support from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, invites participants to the 13th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Conference.
2015 marks the commemorative year of two beginnings in the history of the Philippines and of Spain. Four hundred fifty years ago, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi inaugurated the colonial project with the establishment of pueblos, integrating the Philippine islands into the Spanish empire. Two hundred fifty years later, another beginning took place as the galleon trade came to an end: the Philippines was opened to world trade and began tot ake part in the thriving global economy of the 19th century.
Throughout this entire period, a diaspora of various nationalities spread across the Pacific and forged a maritime network within the Spanish domain. The transpacific trade that spanned nearly three centuries remains a significant part of the shared history of the Philippines and Spain and indeed, of other countries such as Mexico and China. For this reason, the conference will feature an opening plenary session on the galleon trade, led by a panel of invited experts from the Philippines, Spain, and Mexico.
The rest of the two-day conference will be devoted to papers relating to the conference theme, including but not limited to the topics below:

- Archaeological Discoveries
