MISO 06.08.2015

Last year, the Youth For Sustainable Development Assembly (YSDA) conducted the first World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) project in the Philippines and brought the youth to the Rice Terraces of the Cordilleras to rehabilitate abandoned rice terraces and learn indigenous culture.

Now, they are again looking for 40 volunteers (foreign and local) for their upcoming WHV project in Kiangan, Ifugao on July 9-26, 2015. Volunteers will fix the rice terraces, conduct a baseline study in the community, organize an international sports festival, and do some scouting activities.

The WHV Initiative of the UNESCO-World Heritage Centre was launched in 2008 “to mobilize and involve young people and youth organizations in World Heritage preservation and promotion”. It consists of youth action camps  which are organized by local youth organizations or NGOs.

Action camps generally last between two and four weeks, where youth volunteers carry out concrete actions, comprising both hands-on preventive conservation activities and information sessions on issues related to World Heritage, as well as activities carried out together with local communities.

Notes:

1. Accommodation – Volunteers will stay at the Kiangan Youth Hostel, which accommodates 40 people. There are 2 dorm-type rooms to accommodate girls and boys. Each room has a common bathroom. The hostel also has a living room, and some space for volunteers’ own leisure activities. It is about 2 minutes away from the city hall and quite safe.

2. Local transportation – In Manila, volunteers will take the night bus to Kiangan, Ifugao from the bus terminal in Sampaloc, Manila. The bus company is Ohayami Bus Trans., and the bus leaves at 8 PM every night. YSDA will take care of the arrangements, but this is the safest and most reliable way to get to the project site from the capital.
